The Magic of Doing
What is so significant about “practicing” something verses reading about it?
Practice makes a potential experience real. It also decreases anxiety about an anticipated event, increases confidence in abilities, prepares you mentally and physically while reducing intimidation about the “thing” you need to learn or do.
When it comes to preparing for childbirth, that’s exactly what you need to do – practice! There’s no way to get around it. The more you practice, the more prepared you are.
- practice breathing
- moaning and making noise (yes!)
- connecting with your partner
Reading about labor and birth will only give you information and guidelines – that’s it. So taking childbirth classes help you in so many ways to prepare for birth.

By practicing with your partner you enhance birthing skills together. You “tweak” what is not working. You’re able to get an idea of how to work with labor rather than fear it because you don’t know. You beging to intuitively manage your labor, when it begins, from what you know – not from a place of not knowing.
Knowledge is powerful. But applying what you know makes all the difference in the world. Practice reinforces what you know. That’s how we learn, that’s how we prepare so when the time comes, we know what to do.
