When Beta Meets Alpha
Did you know that you actually go in and out of self-hypnosis daily? Wha?
Yep. It’s true. After reading this you should no longer fear what hypnosis is and start using it for “labor pain” , stress, and anxiety management. 🙂
There are four levels of consciousness:
- beta – wakefulness during the day (conscious)
- alpha – daydreaming (subconscious)
- theta – asleep and dreaming
- delta – deep sleep
Now, imagine you are going about your day wide awake. Your mind is “racing” with thoughts of things you need to do and activities to perform. Your brain waves are in “beta”.
Then later on when you’re home you decide to sit down and watch a movie on TV. You begin to relax, calm down, and you get totally involved in the movie. In fact, it’s a movie that really grabs your attention and you emotionally react to it, by laughing or crying, or even yelling at the TV! Your brain waves are in “alpha”!
Beta runs through the day and when it slows down it meets up with alpha and you enter an altered state of consciousness.
Imagination is the communication language of the subconscious mind. Imagination is powerful and will always trumps logic. That’s why “will power” is a challenge to master and be effective in changing behavior.
When beta meets alpha, a relaxed state of mind, you are now more open to “suggestion” , and this is where the magic happens – meaning you can self-direct your emotions, make changes in behavior, and even alter perceptions of physical sensations. 🙂
So, here’s a very simple exercise to test it out:
- take two deep breathes
- sit comfortably in a chair
- avoid being interrupted
- Now, slowly count down from 10 to 1
Now daydream about something pleasant. Open your eyes when you feel like it. How was that? Nice, right?
Self-hypnosis situations you may have experienced (but not aware of):
- reading an exciting book and you are unaware of your surroundings (you don’t hear the phone ringing)
- sun bathing on the beach and reading a book
- driving home and wondering how you got there
- watching movies and TV shows where you emotionally react to
- raiding the refrigerator during TV commercials
By the way “hypnos” means – sleep. And there is NO way you are under the control of anyone who is guiding you through hypnosis.
I’ll write more about this because there’s more to know (this is just a taste) and how you can use this during labor. It’s awesome!
