Why Movement Decreases Labor Pain
For many of us, who are not scientists or neurologists, we lack understanding of how our bodies work chemically and physiologically. We rarely think about how our bodies move, walk or run, even how our brains work!
So when I find nuggets of information that helps to explain how and why our bodies do certain things I want to share them with you. Especially when it’s related to birth and “Labor pain”! “Labor pain” is a major concern for moms-to-be. So, I have good news for you!
I want you to think about this: even though labor contractions create the “pain” you’ll experience during labor, your body can inhibit it at the same time! How awesome is that! So, labor discomfort can decrease by simply moving during a contraction.
The below video may be complicated to follow, but what I want you to remember is this: When you move, for example, sway from side to side during a contraction, it increases activity of “mechanoreceptors” which inhibit other receptors in the spinal cord from sending “pain” signals to the brain.
What does this mean for you? Move! Sway from side to side, shake your hands, jiggle your body, do gentle belly dancing! Movent will decrease your perception of labor pain during contractions!
