One of the best ways to learn a new skill is by immersing yourself into it . Think back, how did you learn to tie your shoes, learn to read, drive a car. Through practice, repeating, and immersion.
When it comes to preparing for childbirth this is exactly what you need to do. Once you learn the skills and actively involve yourself in the process, you will feel more prepared for the birthing experience.
What to immerse yourself in?
- practicing different positions for childbirth. Why? You’ll learn what feels good to you, and it will decrease intimidation when it’s time. Take a prenatal class and get to know your body!
- practicing slow breathing daily. Why? The more you practice the more effective it is.
- immersing yourself in a relaxation program, meditation or hypnosis for childbirth. Why? Again, the more you practice on a daily basis will build your confidence in self-soothing abilities during labor
Being prepared for birth is being willing to do the work of preparing
The above are not to be put on the”back burner” to do later or the day of baby’s birth. Not at all. They won’t work, or rather, you won’t work for yourself.
So. Do more to prepare for the birth of your baby. Focus less on reading books about it and more on doing the work of preparing: relaxation, movement, breathing. Childbirth is a physical experience. Avoid being caught off guard. The more you do actively the more at ease you’ll be.
Birth bold, Lesly 🙂
