The Speed Of Now And Preparing For Birth
My, how times are changing! Especially with technology.
With all the speed of information at your fingertips, how could this influence preparing for birth?
Over the years I have noticed a dwindling of expectant parents enrolling in childbirth classes. Classes that meet once a week for 4 – 6 wks are just about gone! These classes are cancelled because couples aren’t signing-up for them. But, they are signing-up for one-day childbirth “crash” classes – for the speed of information? I wonder …..
Success Magazine has an interesting article in its July issue titled ” The Speed of Now, How to Harness the Acceleration of Everything” by Chris Brogan. It raised my awareness of how most people are thinking and functioning these days with cell phones and mobile devices.
With information about pregnancy sent to your cell phone on a daily basis instantly, information to “snack” on … could the perception of birth be distorted?
Chris lists four attitudes people are displaying resulting from the acceleration of accessible information:
- people want information now
- people want snack-sized information
- people want websites to be mobile-friendly
- people want simple interaction instead of longer-form interaction ( it’s harder to type on a tablet or smartphone than a laptop). In other words, people don’t want to type much
Interesting ….. right?
So here you are getting all your information about pregnancy and birth on your cell phone which creates a distorted sense of time. Because in reality birth takes time! There are no short codes or abbreviated lingo, there is no place for “speed” in preparing for birth or in the birth process itself.
When it comes to preparing for the birth of your baby, slow down, take your time, and don’t “snack” on information, read it fully.
Food for thought? What do you think? Would love to hear it.
