Why Can’t You Eat What You Want During Pregnancy
Ah yes, you are relishing in the wonders of pregnancy. Back pain, swollen feet, morning sickness. Or perhaps you are one of the lucky ones and you are sailing through your pregnancy with ease!
Are you using this time to ignore all your pre-pregnancy healthy eating habits?
Or are you continuing to eat whatever you please, thinking once you are done being pregnant, THEN you will focus on eating healthier and losing weight? It may be tempting to take “eating for two” to the extreme, but there are some risks with making this choice.
One potential risk is you may develop Gestational Diabetes.
Why is this a big deal? Because having Gestational Diabetes can result in birth defects and an increased rate of miscarriage. Diabetes can lead to over-nutrition and excess growth of your baby. Having a large baby increases your risk for a Cesarean delivery.
High blood sugar may also increase your risk of going into labor early. It may cause you to have a pre-mature baby and your baby may need help breathing until his/her lungs mature and become stronger. In addition, your baby may develop low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) which may cause seizures and you increase your baby’s risk for developing obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life!
The main culprits that contribute to developing Gestational Diabetes are breads, table sugar, sweets, pastas, fries… anything starchy ….
Some hidden dangers are High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) which is found in many sauces, salad dressings and even in those “healthy” energy bars! Most packaged foods and beverages contain HFCS so you need to start making it a habit to read the ingredients on everything you buy.
Unfortunately many advertisements and labels can be deceiving and you may think you are eating healthy foods when in reality, you really are not.
So, you really should rethink using your pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever you want…
The good news is eating healthy does not have to be a major sacrifice. Good quality foods with flavorful spices and herbs can actually be very delicious and satisfying!
It is difficult to give all the advice you would need in this one article, to help you reverse or avoid Gestational Diabetes. Everyone is different as far as what they need to change in their diet . But the basic principles you should follow in making the first step towards eating healthier is this:
- Eat fresh vegetables
- whole grains (Quinoa , Oats, Wild Rice)
- lean meats
- Fruits are good to eat, but make sure they are low in sugar content.
- The more you stay away from pre-packaged foods, the better.
- Oh, and of course, drink lots of water!
If you are not used to making meals that are not packaged, go online and search for recipes. Have fun with it and include the family as you explore new foods and new spices! Your body AND your baby will thank you for it!
Pregnancy is such an exciting time and your body is doing something so incredible right now! Do everything you can to have a happy, healthy baby!
