Thoughts Are Just Thoughts
One of the hardest things for others to understand, I think, when I teach a meditation class is this …
Thoughts are just thoughts … that’s all
They’re not real in a tangible sense, you can’t touch them. But, they are powerful and DRIVE behavior.
Here’s the thing though, most of us are not aware of them and how they ramble on in our minds, or the fact that you have a CHOICE in HOW to think.
Much of meditation, especially Mindful Meditation is more about teaching you how to USE your mind to decrease stress and anxiety than relaxing it…
If you can grasp this, your life will be less complicated mentally and emotionally.
Misunderstandings, assumptions about others, perceived perceptions of one thing or another, anxiety, excessive worrying, are all created by at times, misguided thoughts….
If you want to have a calmer life, check your thoughts at the door, and experience what is real, what is really going on in your life, in the moment.
Hard to do? Yes and no. Hard to do because you’re used to being/living on autopilot and believe you couldn’t possibly think another way. You’re right, simply because you believe you can’t.
Not heard because you believe there’s another way to calm your worries, your anxieties, again, you’re right. Simply because you believe you can think differently.
Now I totally understand this having been there myself. But, EXPERIENCE will teach you ONLY through hands-on practice. The magic is in CHOOSING to think differently.
“My mind just wanders, and then I started thinking about this, then that, and wondering when this would be over … before you know it I was in a tizzy about it and what would happen if ……”
” I have no time, I have all these things I have to do today ….” WHAT THINGS, “Well, I have to do the wash, take out the garbage… and other things..” WHAT OTHER THINGS ….. “I don’t know, but I have things to do….”
What is thought in the mind, RARELY, if EVER, plays out in reality…
Ok, so what do you do.
First, accept the idea that thoughts are just thoughts and you can CHOOSE how to direct them. You really do have a conscious choice in how to use your thinking.
Second, practice exploring your ability to direct your thinking. What you pay attention to will become your focus . Try this – sit in a noisy room and listen to sounds. Pay attention to what you hear … listen carefully. Make a list of how many different sounds you heard. Your mind will only focus on one sound at a time.
When it comes to anxious thoughts, you can stop mid-thought and simply ask yourself, is this true? Where did this thought come from? This will give you incredible power in a moment to accept, think about it later, or reject it. You don’t have to buy into what you’re thinking and much of it is nonsense.
