Building Self Reliance During Pregnancy
Do you rely on your own judgement when making decisions? Or, do you depend on others to guide you.
Self reliance is the ability to rely on what you know is best for you and follow it. Call this “gut” reactions, or intuition, or the “little voice” that speaks to you. It’s this voice that’s the best guide and best friend you’ll ever have (throughout your life) because it comes from within you!
Why is this important?
Pregnancy and the experience of birth is a physical (and emotional) one. Not only that, but when it’s time to birth your baby, it’s happening physically only to you. Not your partner, friend, or even your mother. So building self-reliance (watch this silly video on made on this topic) is important because you’ll be able to depend on your own instincts, respond accordingly, “tune” into your body better than you normally do now – which I’m going to guess, is seldom?
Do you touch your belly often? Have you forgotten, in passing moments, that you’re even pregnant throughout your busy day?
Often pregnancy itself is painless and it’s easy to have fleeting moments of “Oh yeah, that’s right! I’m pregnant!” moments. Because you forget temporarily. Suddenly you become aware of your physical status.
Besides, when you rely on yourself and not others, you’re more apt to get what YOU want. Many times, and I have experienced this myself, when you do what others think you should do, it usually never works out, right?
But when you follow your instincts you’ll come out a winner 99.9% of the time! Also you’ll be more confident in your decisions.
So what does this have to do with pregnancy and birth? Everything! Your baby is coming out of your body, no one else’s. Here’s why building self-reliance during pregnancy is so important. You’ll be:
- more confident
- less apt to do what someone else thinks you should do (this is based on their experiences, not yours)
- more honest and truthful with yourself
- more likely to honor and stand-up for what you want or need (which will make you happier)
- able to understand your body better because you’ll be more “tuned” in to it physically
- trust your body to birth
The more you rely on yourself the more confident and satisfied you’ll be with your birth choices and your birth experience.
For example, you may be interested in seeing a midwife, but your family and friends are telling you to see a doctor instead. But you’re curious! You want to know what the difference is in care. So, do you listen to your friends and family and have this annoying feeling that you should have looked into it?
- listen to your “gut” feelings
- follow your instincts. If you want a midwife, find out more about them. Then make your decision
- learn how your body works (surprise, it’s not out to hurt you :-))
- read books on building intuition skills, Laura Day writes about this
- touch your pregnant belly daily and throughout the day to feel your baby move and to experience those “warm-up” contractions
- avoid being led by others, lead yourself
- always remember how smart and awesome you are!
