I wasn’t always an RN or childbirth educator! No, my first love was to be an artist. I was going to be the next Pablo Picasso. I received my BA from Rutgers University in Museum studies and Art History. My plan was to become a curator after college and paint. But, after an internship at a museum, and holding a thousand year old vase in my gloved hands, I decided that wasn’t for me. Can you imagine if I dropped it and it broke? OMG – cardiac arrest!
I then became a “window dresser” or rather a “visual merchandiser” for Macy’s which was a lot of fun. I designed and decorated departments in the store along with dressing those fashion “dummies” in the latest fashion. The only thing is the company wasn’t to family friendly.
I was going to get married and my manager was priming me to go and open a new Macy’s at another location and I didn’t want to go. So I resigned. Around this time, before I quit, I was also painting and I had turned my apartment into an art gallery. I would show my artwork along with other artists I knew. It was so much fun and inspiring! During this time I got married and the direction of my life changed towards starting a family.
How did I get into nursing?
When I resigned from Macy’s I had to find another job. I got hired as a nurse’s aide at a local hospital. I had worked as one while putting myself through college so it made sense to look for work in that area again and I was also interested in medical science. While working as an aide, I went back to school to receive my RN, and an Associates degree in science. I became a labor and delivery nurse and later a childbirth educator. I’ve been teaching over 14 years now! LOVE IT!
Years ago a friend of mine who I loved very much died from cancer. Before he did though I became interested in Reiki because he had several Reiki treatments while in the hospital. After he died I studied Reiki and energy healing and became a Reiki practitioner and Master. Then I studied hypnosis and received my certification as a Hypnocounselor in New Jersey. I was, and still am, interested in these methods for pain management because I knew as a labor and delivery nurse how important relaxation is during the birthing process for mom and baby.
During the summer of 2011, I attended a week long retreat at Omega in Rheinbeck, New York, learning about Jon Kabat-Zin’s Mindful Stress Reduction program which involved a week-long and hours of meditation and self-reflection. When I completed the retreat, a colleague of mine (also an RN and a Doula) and myself created the “Mindful Pregnancy and Birth” childbirth class which is now offered at Overlook and Morristown Medical Centers. We wanted to create a program for those women who want to learn in-depth relaxation skills, specifically Mindful Meditation, as a method to reduce stress and potentially have an unmedicated, natural birth.
My teaching and personal interests revolve around meditation and mindfulness in all that I am and do, respectfully. So my journey has led me to where I am today and I am grateful for all the experiences I’ve had for they make me a better educator!
At home I have an incredible son, 16 going on 50, a crazy Boston Terrier dog, and absolutely love what I do! By the way, I still draw and dabble in art 🙂
